Imagine standing on the shore and taking a deep breath. Not only does the scent of salt water tickle your nose, but it is accompanied by tones of seaweed, wood, flowers and herbs growing nearby… in short, its entire surroundings. This is what characterises perfumes with the fragrance of the sea and oceans. They are much more complex than they may seem. What can you smell in them?
In the Beginning There Was Just Calone
The era of marine perfumes began in the 1960s with the discovery of a substance called calone. It all happened by accident – scientists were originally developing an affordable sedative (now known as Valium). However, they managed to find an ingredient with an authentic marine freshness and floral undertones, reminiscent of a salty breeze. Although some may even detect cucumber, watermelon or oyster in it. In any case, it is an ingredient that defines the entire group of marine fragrances and has become part of many iconic perfumes.
